In anticipation of its 77th anniversary, the Naval Academy recently held the "Second Bilingual Leadership Conference: Learning to Lead—A Lifelong Pursuit of Service." The event attracted over 500 participants, including domestic and international experts, scholars, and students from National Sun Yat-sen University as well as the Military Academy and Air Force Academy. Admiral Tang, Chief of Navy, presided over the opening ceremony.
Admiral Tang delivered his address in English, beginning with an explanation of the term "leadership," which he described as comprising the concepts of "leader" and "ship." He likened navigating a ship through turbulent seas to the challenges of leadership, emphasizing that a true leader should not only be a good person but also a role model. He referenced the Bible’s mentions of sheep, noting their tendency to stray and become lost, which underscores the need for a shepherd to guide them back. Leaders, he said, must understand those they lead, combining guidance with protection. Patience and awareness of subordinates' true needs are essential, as is the willingness to accept suggestions from them.
The Admiral stressed that being an officer involves not just guiding and protecting, but also training. He highlighted the importance of forging strength, resilience, and fighting will within their teams. Leaders should inspire confidence and courage among their ranks and, when necessary, provide solutions. By fostering mutual understanding, trust, and respect, they can create a cohesive and effective team.
In closing, Admiral Tang urged the attending students to "learn to lead," not only aspiring to be good leaders themselves but also nurturing the next generation of leaders to continually build an exceptional team.
